- Virgins’ Bower (Clematis virginiana) photographed along the Mill Prong Trail, Shenandoah National Park by Barb Stewart
Virgin’s Bower (Clematis virginiana) is a native Virginia vine. It is in the buttercup family and typically grows along stream sides and open thickets. It has showy white flowers which turn into these fairy-like seed heads in the autumn. An aggressive grower, it can climb over vertical supports be they a small sapling or a trellis in your yard. The flowers are favored by bees and butterflies for their pollen.
