The Spitzenburg or Esopus Spitzenburg is particularly interesting to Virginia history as it was one of Thomas Jefferson’s favorites. It originated in Esopus, New York in the 1800s and has been a favorite of apple loves ever since. It is a beautiful medium to large sized apple, brushed with orange and red hues, highlighted with golden undertones. Its best flavor develops after being harvested and placed in cool temperatures for a few weeks. Then it becomes a wonderful eating apple which makes fine pies and the fruit will keep for several months.
