This apple is considered a true heritage variety as it was widely grown in the new world in the 1600s and 1700s and reportedly grown extensively in North Carolina in the 1800s. It came from Europe where it was equally popular, though descriptions of its flavor vary greatly from having a taste that is ‘nothing special’, to having a pleasant ‘fruity taste’ (similar to another variety called Blenheim Orange) and a ‘juicy, subacid flavor’.
Big Horse Creek Farm has historical information on the Golden Rienette.
