Lord Hindlip

This apple is from England where it was developed in the late 1800s and is still grown extensively today.  In earlier times it was highly valued as an apple which keeps for months, its taste improving in cool storage, perhaps due to its flesh not being as juicy as the typical fresh eating apples like the Golden Delicious or the Albemarle Pippin.

For several of the old fashioned apples, the ability to keep them in a root cellar or spring house for several months over the winter was very important to early settlers who did not have modern refridgeration.  To grow an apple whose flavor would improve over time was of great benefit in the lean months of the winter.
