It was a lovely early fall day for a float trip down the Shenandoah – maples turning red, mid seventies, sunshine and a good group of folks. The Pure Water Forum was holding its annual float trip thanks to Outdoor Adventure Experiences who provided the rafts and guides.
The group had lunch at the White House prior to launching at Alma and floating the six miles back to the White House bridge boat landing. Along the way, we saw an immature and adult eagle, a belted kingfisher, a great blue heron and water striders. Numerous fish darted around the graceful green tendrils of star grass in the crystal clear waters.
Water quality has improved in the Shenandoah River with few recent reports of fish with lesions. Jason, one of the guides said with a smile, “the Shenandoah is back”, as he described the large bass he had seen.
We are grateful to Paul Bugas for organizing the trip and to Joe Lehnen, chair of the Pure Water Forum. Many thanks to Izzie (the fuzzy black one at the helm) for demonstrating the entire trip just how much fun a river can be and how grand it is to be out in the sunshine!
